Summary on Grant Application Form
A three-dimensional Navier Stokes flow solver which has been developed under a US ONR contract for studying the wakes of towed cylinders will be used to study the interaction of free surface waves with vertical cylinders. The code is based on a vorton (particle) approach to convection with viscous diffusion and stretching of vorticity represented on an unstructered mesh using a finite element solver. The standard linearised boundary condition is applied at the free surface. Because of the computational cost of obtaining the three dimensional unsteady viscous flow solutions (currently about 1 week on a Silicon Graphics R4000 workstation) and in order to extend the Reynolds number range it is proposed to run the code on the Fujitsu AP1000 parallel computer in Imperial College. This version will then be used to study vertical cylinder flows on free surface waves and determine the accuracy of the two-dimensional strip theory approach used in the past for their prediction. This project is a bridge to a future project on the numerical simulation of the flow fields of general bodies in waves for which it is hoped that appropriate codes will be run on a CRAY T3D parallel computer under a proposed programme on Marine CFD.
