We propose to measure the adsorption isotherms of oils onto surfactant monolayers at the air-water surface (2-D solubilisation). We wish to probe the role of oil solubilisation in monolayers in determining the tendency of monolayer to curve and thereby the phase behaviour of oil + water + surfactant mixtures. Variables which affect spontaneous monolayer curvature, including surfactant and oil molecular structure, salt addition and temperature will be investigated. The microstructure of selected mixed oil/surfactant films will be examined using neutron reflection and ellipsometry. Preliminary results have shown the viability of the novel approach to be used.
