Summary on Grant Application Form
The research programme concerns the development of electrical property measurements for microstructural characterisation and evaluation of transport and flow coefficients in cementitious systems. These systems will comprise blends of OPC with pozzolanic materials. A.C impedance spectroscopy will be employed to obtain (accurate) bulk conductivity measurements of samples; when used in conjunction with conductivity measurements on expressed pore fluid, will allow evaluation of the normalised conductivity. This part of the experimental programme will be supplemented with diffusion; permeability and MIP studies to enable validation and/or refinement of transport models based on normalised conductivity. Complex impedance measurements (over the frequency range 10Hz - 20MHz) will enable quantification of both the bulk dielectric response (capacitance) and the fractal dimension of the pore surfaces. Arrhenius relationships will be established for both diffusion and conduction processes under thermal cycling to investigate activation energies and microstructural alteration.
