Summary on Grant Application Form
There is growing concern over the health and comfort, energy use and environmental impact associated with air-conditioned buildings. The reaction to this in the commercial building sector has been a shift towards the design of naturally ventilated buildings, and there is some discussion as to whether future building regulations should discourage air-conditioned environments. However, there are potential problems associated with naturally ventilated buildings, for example, low fresh air ventilation rates in winter, summertime cooling, provision of fresh air in relation to external noise and pollution, and constraints on building form and space planning. This project aims to investigate the case for natural ventilation in office type buildings in order to provide information and guidance to designers, their professional organisations, developers and regulatory committees, It is recognised that buildings need not be totally ventilated and mixed mode ventilation will also be considered.
