Summary on Grant Application Form
The research project outlined in this proposal seeks to investigate the nature of road vehicle particulate pollutants, to determine the environmental pathways followed by such pollutants as they disperse within the atmosphere and are washed off the road into watercourses, and to validate existing and modified pollution dispersion models being developed by the applicants. This research is particularly timely since it has recently come to be realised that particulate pollutants are implicated in the increasing incidence of asthma and cancer, and can cause severe waterway pollution. The proposed experiments consist of on-street measurements of atmospherjc and road surface particulate concentrations and distributions, together with concurrent traffic flow data; subsequent laboratory analysis of the particulates, the laboratory investigation of the nature of particulate runoff; and the verification of different models of particulate pollution dispersion being developed by the applicants. These measurements will give basic information on the nature of vehicle particulate pollutants and of the mechanisms involved in their dispersion.
