Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposal seeks to extend the funding of the Sheffield Central Facility for III-V Semiconductors for a further four year period. The case is based on the unique and highly strategic position which the Facility holds, as the major provider to EPSRC grant holders, of high quality, custom-specific, epitaxial multilayers in the (InGaA1)/(AsP) based material system and also in the provision of a very widely used device fabrication service. There are currently 51 authorised grants and 32 different user groups in UK universities drawing on the Facility resources.Funding is requested to maintain the level of resource very close to its present level. The principal capital items of expenditure are a replacement growth chamber for the P based MBE reactor after twelve years of heavy use, and a new, high resolution, field emission SEM, to replace our ageing thirteen year old Cambridge Stereoscan SEM.The proposal also describes separate EPSRC-funded research programmes at Sheffield designed to bring new state-of-the-art capabilities on-stream to grant holders.
