Daylight in cities is attenuated by air-borne pollution and by dirt on building surfaces. This attenuation can cause the level of daylighting in an urban building to be half that in a similar building under clean conditions, with a corresponding increase of electric lighting use. No accurate data exist for predicting urban daylighting, for guiding buildings users on cleaning, or for estimating the increased lighting energy costs due to pollution.The project consists of:i. Measurements of sky luminance and solar illuminance at city centre sites;ii. Measurements of glazing transmittance in a large sample of urban buildings;iii. Experimental measurements of transmittance in relation to dirt deposition;iv. Development of empirical models of daylight attenuation;v. Preparation of guidelines for designers and building managers, and calculation of the impact of pollution on building energy costs.
