Summary on Grant Application Form
The project aims to improve the isotope ratio capabilities of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Simultaneous ion sampling will be achieved by reducing the resolution of the quadrupole mass spectrometer and focusing the emerging ions into an ion trap mass spectrometer. These ions can then be ejected from the ion trap and detected separately. Since the ions were sampled under the same plasma conditions, it is expected that this approach will provide a substantial enhancement in the precision of isotope ratios determined by ICP-MS. Such improvement will revolutionize future isotope dilution and tracer studies.
