Summary on Grant Application Form
Fundamental measurements of mould flux behaviour will be made, in order to explain the corrosion of submerged entry nozzles used in continuos casting. The kinetics of zirconia dissolution in synthetic mould fluxes will be measured using a rotating zirconia finger immersed in molten flux. The effective diffusivity of zirconia will be determined as a function of flux composition and will be correlated with flux viscosity. The resistance to flux attack of a standard commercial zirconia - graphite material will be measured using the same synthetic fluxes and compared with the resistance to a commercial flux. Attempts will be made to correlate the corrosion behaviour of the refractory with the measured transport properties of the synthetic fluxes and predicted properties of the commercial flux.
