Features in small patterns can be measured, using a multi-wire proportional counter (MWPC) at the Daresbury (SRS) to ~1% accuracy over five orders in intensity. This level of accuracy demands that the MWPC's flat field response (ie the response to uniform ullumination) can be well-calibrated at the precise energy employed in the diffraction experiment (8.86 keV in the case of SRS station 16.1). The goal of this programme is to complete the construction of an 8.86keV beam expander which can uniformly fill the 20x20cm2 aperture of the Daresbury MWPC and which can then be mechanically removed from the beampipe, allowing diffraction data collection to resume.
