Summary on Grant Application Form
The first part of the proposal is an attempt to generalise results of Cherlin and Hrushovski (based on work of Kantor, Liebeck and Macpherson) on finite structures with an upper bound on the number of 4-types. We hope to produce related results on finite structures with few 2-types, examine the corresponding infinite structures, and combine pseudofinite fields and smoothly approximable structures into a general theory. This will use a description of large finite primitive permutation groups with few orbits on pairs, which should soon be available. The second part concerns automorphisms of countable, saturated (usually omega-categorical) stuctures, and the extent to which they are determined by their automorphism group. We will concentrate on the small index property for various classes of structures, generic automorphisms, extension lemmas for automorphisms, and connections with abstract group theory.
