Summary on Grant Application Form
This research proposal is concerned with the long term performance under cyclic loads of FRP sandwich panels which could potentially be used in the hull structures of high speed craft. The overall objective of the research is to develop a fatigue and design methodology for sandwich panels under realistic marine enironmental and operational conditions. The novel scientific features will be three-fold: a) investigation of the effects of water exposure on beams under fatigue loading; b) extension of the range of construction materials covering fire resistant sandwich beams; c) studying the performance of sandwich panels under biaxal loading. The scientific scope of the programme will thus cover solid mechanics, fatigue characterisation, material science and structural design of the hulls of fast craft. The potential beneficiaries and users of the work would be materials suppliers, ship designers, shipyards, owners/operators and regulatory bodies. The principal benefit for these groups would be improved quality of materials, design and operations of the vessels. There is a potential for optimised maintenance and reliability of the craft.
