Summary on Grant Application Form
Recent work in Newcastle and elsewhere has led to significant improvements in the anode performance of the DMFC. As a result small single cell units have been constructed with energy densities of c.0.2 Wcm-2 for oxygen and greater than 0.1 Wcm-2 for air cathodes. This performance is sufficient to envisage the construction of practical prototypes of DMFC's in order to explore the difficulties inherent in scaling up this technology. A liquid-feed system has been chosen to control thermal effects, and close collaboration is envisaged between chemists, electrochemical engineers and electrical engineers in the testing, modelling and evaluation of a small prototype. From the experience of operating this, a larger practical unit is planned.
