Summary on Grant Application Form
Candidate new concept membranes will be examined, exploring 3 concepts:1. New sulfonated thermostable organopolymers.2. Sulfonated organic-inorganic polymers.3. Polymer-bonded inorganic proton conductors.Electrolyte membranes will be evaluated both electrochemically and in terms of their thermal stability. Thus measurements will include thermal studies (DSC, TG), ionic conductivity, electrochemical stability, microstructural characterisation. Promising new materials will be examined in a single-cell test-bed. Deliverables include possible identification of a low cost system to permit SPFCs to move to elevated temperature and/or away from their reliance on sulfonated fluorocarbons.
