Summary on Grant Application Form
The commercial exploitation of high temperature solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) systems for clean power generation and transportation is still restricted by a lack of information on their long term durability. The current proposal addresses the mechanical integrity of generic Membrane Electrolyte Assembly (MEA) structures. To understand the long-term reliability of typical MEA structures under the combined thermal and mechanical loading conditions expected during service, it is necessary to establish how the system behaves as a whole throughout its service life. The main aim of this investigation is to develop an understanding of the dominant mechanisms of failure in MEA structures, and to formulate a series of sound guidelines for producing reliable designs and a methodology for estimating lifetimes of these structures under practical operation conditions. This research is an attempt to develop a fundamental understanding of the performance and find profitable and reliable ways forward for future SOFC technology. It is expected that the resulting methodology will be applicable to future SOFC designs.
