The development of supported electrolyte membranes allows operation of SOFC's at lower temperatures (600-850) because of the reduced thickness and hence resistance of the electrolyte (5-20m). This lower temperature is beneficial, making cell design and manufacturer less complex.There have been few detailed kinetic and electrochemical studies on SOFC's in this temperature region. In particular we owuld like to investigate internal reforming of methane fuels (external reforming is expensive and direct oxidation of methane is difficult). However, there can be problems of carbon deposition with conventional Ni catalysts so alternatives will be investigated.The main aims of the project are to develop alternatives to the conventional mickel-zirconia cermet anodes, to investigate the microstructural properties of the alternative cermet anodes and to investigate the kinetics of internally reformed methane on alternative cermet anodes in the temperature range 600-850C). This will be performed with cells using supported electrolyte membranes.
