It is proposed to enhance the MARI spectrometer at ISIS, by completing the design detector complement and developing the associated data analysis software to calculate the quantities of specific interest in the study of amorphous materials. The enhanced spectrometer will be used to perform a series of flagship experiments, which are presently not feasible. These involve an investigation of (1) the origin of the D1 and D2 defect lines of vitreous silica and the effect of neutron irradiation on their intensity, (2) the role of superstructural units in the structure and dynamics of vitreous B2O3 and a series of alkali borate glasses, (3) the composition dependence of the A1c companion line for Ge-Se glasses and the validity of the outrigger raft model for vitreous GeSe2 and (4) the potential of pulsed neutron sources for anomalous dispersion experiments to study both the structure and dynamics of amorphous materials.
