Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this project is to explore the mathematical structure of string theory in order to shed light on a fundamental new formulation of string theory. The perturbative structure is explored through the study of conformal field theory and its deformations to integrable models, which are relevant to off-shell string theory. This is then generalised to include the study of new string theories based on W-algebras. The non-perturbative structure is explored through the study of solitons, such as black holes and p-branes, and other solutions of the theory. A central theme is that of symmetry: this has already played a central role in much of modern theoretical physics and we hope that focusing on the symmetry structures of string theory (particularly quality symmetries and extended conformal algebras) will provide the key to a deeper understanding of string theory.
