A drawback of the use of high velocity ventilation systems is the noise levels arising from the interaction of airflow and ductwork elements. It has been shown that the standard techniques for predicting airflow generated noise due to air duct elements found in the ASHRAE Handbook and Part B12 of the CIBSE Guide seriously underestimate the levels of noise likely to be encountered in practical systems.The reason for the paucity of data relating to the noise generation characteristics of duct elements arises because in order to obtain measure data, access is required to a fully equipped acoustic and aerodynamic test facility and these are rate and expensive. The expense of experimentation has meant only limited progress in removing the well recognised errors in existing design guidance methods. This application is concerned with utilising recent developments in computing power and software to overcome the problems associated with the experimental determination of the airflow noise generated in ventilation systems. The novel element in this application is to explore the conditions in the duct using fluid dynamics and acoustics software packages that have only become available in the last few years. This will enable a range of elements to be investigated without the use of expensive and limited experimental facilities.
