The essential concept involves the development of novel cementitious materials by exploiting hydrothermal synthesis to initiate reactions with polymers and siliceous waste materials not possible with standard room temperature curing. The influence of polymeric additives and waste reactive silicas on the mechanical properties and chemical, physical and microstructural characteristics of autoclaved calcium silicates will be examined (thermal and durability query include). The reason for undertaking this research is to provide substantive evidence of the commercial/environmental benefits resulting from polymer and waste additions. The rationale for combining these two seemingly disparate components is: (i) to address positively the inevitable increase in raw material costs associated with polymer modification by incorporating lower cost cementitious ingredients, and (ii) to establish whether any synergistic effects arise from thier combination. Significant advances in the science and technology of autoclaved calcium silicates will be forthcoming.
