Summary on Grant Application Form
A centre for industrial applied mathematics problem solving will be established within the University of Strathclyde. The Centre will organise meetings and workshops between industrialists and (academic) applied mathematicians. The Centre will initiate long term research programmes of clear relevance to industry, and will act as a focus for training and re-training courses in industrially relevant mathematics and software. Another important feature of the Centre would be Advice Clinics; these will be held on a regular basis at the most appropriate institute where a particular company can seek help in formulation and model building, in confidence if required. This will necessitate the appointment of an energetic mathematically trained coordinator who would visit many companies to seek out problems which could be solved by mathematicians.
