Summary on Grant Application Form
A theoretical feasibility study is proposed for exploring the potential space charge waves for optical signal processing. First the conditions under which space charge wave resonances can be obtained (when the thickness of the device is equal to an integral number of wavelengths of the space charge wave) will be studied. Next the possibility of space charge wave generation by the application of a time-varying voltage will be investigated by solving the relevant partial differential equations. Finally, the possibility of power transfer from a power supply to an optical wave will be studied. In each case the intention is to find the optimum parameters realizable by existing materials or possibly by materials which can be synthesised by present materials technology.
