The project aims to advance the science of distributed optical fibre sensors to enable pH monitoring as a function of linear position with resolution of much less than one metre. The sensor will rely on advances in hydrogel formulation to transduce pH changes into dimensional changes in a cabled optical fibre. These changes modify the micro bending loss along the fibre. The sensor is particularly useful in detecting pH changes. Such sensors have important applications in corrosion monitoring in civil structures and environmental monitoring especially in the water supply industry. The project will build upon initial laboratory experiments on a trial system to monitor water ingress. The project comprises the following principal features: research into new hydrogel formulations, research into signal processing to match the system characteristics to the signals to be detected and investigations of cabling techniques which are environmentally compatible and tolerate installation procedures. Laboratory trials of representative systems in a realistic environment examining corrosion monitoring and environmental monitoring will be performed. The basic technique is inherently generic and in principle permits examination of other measurands, for example ionic strength, selected metallic ions etc, depending on hydrogel formulation.
