Summary on Grant Application Form
Sandpiles are statistically disordered but not in thermal equilibrium. We aim to produce improved physical theories that reflect our current understanding of disordered systems and describe more closely real sandpile behaviour. The work involves a continuum approach in which a constitutive relation between stress components must be assumed. Because of the indeterminacy of frictional forces, the choice of constitutive relation is a physical modelling task (rather than applied mathematics or engineering). Existing models will be improved to allow for nonlinear and/or noisy constitutive relations, andones that depend on the construction history of the sandpile. These problems will be progressed by numerical and analytical studies of the resulting continuum equations, based in part on those of our existing model which describes sandpile evolution by coupled nonlinear equations for height and rolling-grain density.
