Summary on Grant Application Form
Horowitz QFT design procedures have been applied very successfully on real aircraft systems in the United States, but the approach has not been adopted in the European aerospace industry because of the complexibility and inaccessibility of the method. A major aim of the project will be to demonstrate the advantages and benefits of the approach by undertaking a number of major flight control design studies in collaboration with British Aerospace. To make the design approach more accessible the theoretical basis will be reworked and tutorial reports produced. New software will be developed extending the US work but learning from recent advances on robust numerical algorithms.Design studies and software will be produced in three stages for scalar systems, multivariable systems and for nonlinear flight control models. Reports will be produced covering the theory, design procedures and software manuals. The main theoretical challenge will lie in producing a unified theory which enables the improved robustness to both structured and unstructured uncertainty to be achieved. The design procedures for nonlinear systems will also require novel theoretical developments.
