Summary on Grant Application Form
The research proposed here is intended to provide the first comprehensive validation of a driving simulator and thereby to indicate both the strengths and weaknesses of the existing configuration. This will provide researchers with the first scientifically-based guide for interpreting results obtained on a simulator. It will also provide guidance on how the Simulator can be modified to overcome any deficiencies that are detected. Finally, the project will prpvide benchmarks against which other simulators can be compared. The work will focus on the most basic components of driving performance, namely speed choice, braking and steering. The main test environment on the Simulator will be as accurate a facsimile as is possible of a selected rural two-lane arterial. The driving of 100 subjects in the Simulator will be compared with a detailed set of measurements taken from the traffic using the real road.
