Summary on Grant Application Form
A world-class facility for the simultaneous study of polymer structure and rheology will be constructed by modifying a commercial rheometer for use in tandem with synchrotron x-ray scattering. This instrument will be used to investigate structure formation in soft solids such as block copolymer melt and solutions, semicrystalline polymers and liquid crystal polymers subjected to shear and extensional flow. The use of synchroton radiation at a combined small angle/wide-angle x-ray scattering beamline will enable ground-breaking research on polymer processing issues, for example crystallization kinetics in major commercial polymers such as polypropylene and polythylene and under shear or extensional flow. The instrument will initially be used at the Daresbury Laboratory, with further experiments at the European Synchroton radiation facility. It will also be made available to industrial and academic users for other soft solids processing experiments. The UK Science and Technology base will benefit from our studies and from this facility, with significant wealth creation opportunities from new polymer processing strategies, and enhanced understanding of correlations between structure and material properties.
