Summary on Grant Application Form
The overall aim of the project is to develop and validate predictive models of fatigue life and damage growth for components representative of general engineering applications. Damage growth in fracture toughness specimens and representative coupons will be monitored and quantified using a variety of methods and the data used to construct a predictive model. The latter will be based on finite element stress analysis together with calculations of strain energy release rate. The predictions will be validated against the performance of components. Both carbon fibre and glass fibre-reinforced materials will be studied. The use of such a procedure will allow designers to be right first time thus eliminating expensive re-design, tooling modification and delays, and will signficiantly reduce the requirements, and cost, of perfomrance and life cycle testing of components.
