Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this project is to develop efficient, wavelength specific, semiconductor detectors for use in the optical sensing of environmental gases. Primarily, we shall use GaInSb/GaSb MQW and GaInSb bulk layers. The bandgap of these structures can be varied from 1.6-7um by changing the composition and/or well-width. Both Schottky and p-i-n diode structures will be investigated, the former mainly with bulk layers. We will study the use of a Fabry-Perot cavity to enhance detection sensitivity and also to give wavelength selectivity. The quantum confined Stark effect can be used in conjunction with an a.c. signal to switch a MQW detector on and off a gas absorption line. Monitoring the in-phase change in photocurrent could offer a further means of achieving enhanced sensitivity at a particular wavelength. GaSb/InAs detectors operating at 4-10um may also be studied.
