Summary on Grant Application Form
Experiments in progress by Wybourne in Oregon and Roukes and Scherer in CalTech on the low temperature thermal properties of free-standing wires and films with nanoscale transverse dimensions are promising for the first time to demonstrate the existence of mesoscopic phonon phenomena. Just as for electrons in quantum well and wire structures, it is expected that the phonons will display novel transport properties when their wavelength exceeds the transverse dimensions of the free-standing structures at around 1K. We aim to provide the theory for these experiments. In the first half of the research project, we shall determine the thermal conductivity at Kelvin temperatures of nanosize thickness free-standing silicon wires and films having various defects such as surface roughness, dislocations, etc. We shall also investigate the quantum dynamics of a small number of phonons interacting with a few defects at millikelvin temperatures. In the second half of the project, we shall study the electron-phonon interaction at Kelvin temperatuers in free-standing Au-Pd alloy films and wires of nanoscale thickness. An understanding of phonon dynamics at millikelvin temperatures will help determine the limits on the sensitivity of the recently invented Magnetic Resonance Force Microscope. Further applications of our proposed research include the control and removal of heat generated in nanoelectronic devices (so as to ensure their proper functioning) and the termal properties of metal sinters in He-3-He-4 dilution refrigerators.
