Summary on Grant Application Form
Three newly appointed members of the Physics Department at the University of Leeds request pump-priming funding of a joint laser facility for the development over a three year period of two core projects. Core project one will monitor the segmental dynamics occuring within miscible high molecular weight blends of cis1,4-polyisoprene and poly(vinylethylene) via time-resolved optical spectroscopy. These measurements will complement existing studies of the unblended local polymer dynamics offering an opportunity to explore the compositional dependencies of local motions in the bulk state which is not possible for single homopolymer systems where there is only one melt composition. Core project two will combine resonant laser excitation with a scanning tunnelling microscope to yield an analytical instrument with the high spatial resolution of scanning probe microscopy and the chemical resolution of optical spectroscopy. The proposed instrument will complement our near-field optical studies of membranes and membranes-bound proteins for biosensors.
