Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose to use phonon techniques to study the FQHE, Wigner and IQHE states of 2DEGs and 2DHGs and the properties of quasi-one dimensional systems. The studies include emission and absorption and we plan to look for phonon diffraction from the Wigner lattice. The techniques include cw, pulse, coherent and imaging and we also plan to develop a phonon spectrometer base on a resonant tunnel device to examine the frequency distribution of emitted phonons. The experimental programme will be carried out in close interaction with parallel theoretical studies. We plan to explore the use of STM fabrication for new physics and devices using the newly installed STM housed in a UHV chamber. The programme includes pattern writing on thin films and semiconductors, using the STM to modify nanostructures prepared by selective etching and identifying the constraints set by properties such as substrate conductivity, alignment, contacting etc. on the feature sizes etc. that can be achieved by STM lithography. The samples for these programmes, for others of the NUMBERS research group (Quantum Transport, Far-Infrared, Devices etc.) and for other UK users will be prepared by the NUMBERS MBE unit. Many of the samples require innovative growth studies for their preparation.
