Previous work by the applicants has resulted in the development of a prototype design support system for chemical process design.The possibilities offered by the system in its present form are exciting and have generated considerable interest from several companies in the process industries.The application of design support systems presents opportunities to improve chemical processes by enhancing the design process. A suitable system will allow the designer to re-use parts of previous designs, and will enable him or her to explore larger portions pf the design space. A design support system can assist the designer by managing the complexity of the design, maintaining consistency between parts of a design, presenting the right information at the appropriate level of detail, and undertaking the tedious and repetitive tasks within the design work. The research programme will have five main activities: development of a distributed design support system; provision of infrastructure for problem-solvers and knowledge-based systems; extension of current representation to batch and bioprocessing design; integration of diverse design criteria and communication with external design tools.We will aim, within the period of the programme, to have carried out a study, in collaboration with industry, to establish the ability of the system to support 'real' design.
