Autoexpansion circuit-breakers use the arc energy to generate the gas pressure and blast for arc extinction. The potential of this type of breaker jas not been fully explored due to a lack of quantitative understanding of the major physical processes. The proposal is aimed at establishing an analytical method and its associated computer software. Two approaches will be used in parallel. A simplified model which assumes similar radial profiles of axial velocity and temperature will be employed to predict the behaviour of the arc and its interaction with the surroundings. A full model based on the arc conservation equations in full partial differential form and the appropriate Maxwell's equation will be used to predict the spatial distributions of velocity, temperature, current density and electric fields. Lorenz force, ablation and the moving contacts will be taken into account. Predictions will be verified by full power tests at Reyrolle.
