An RLAN is a structured or ad-hoc network which is geographically localised and which supports users within a small area. The RLAN provides a relatively cheap way to share expensive peripherals; provides fast reliable communications and supports the development and use of distributed systems. It also provides a building block for larger and more complex systems. This proposal is concerned with the investigation and development of future indoor high bit rate RLANs. The proposed research programme is supported by practical measurements. The work programme will first establish the appropriate bit rates for the next generation (Ghz HIPERLAN) of RLANs. It will measure indoor propagation characteristics at 17 and 60ghz. It will devise optimum modulation and concatenated coding techniques for high bit rates and will consider antenna adaptability and diversity.
