Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposal is part of a DTI/LINK Structural Composites project involving manufacturing industry, and users, who will both be interested in having carbon composite structures which can be repaired without using expensive high-temperature autoclave-cured systems. There are becoming available much cheaper systems using lower temperature curing prepregs and adhesive films. It is not yet known whether the traditional weakness of even shallow-angle scarf joints (that is fatigue and durability) will still remain for these new tougher resins. It is certainly not confidently known whether the static or fatigue behaviour of scarf patches can be predicted using composite generic and fundamental properties. The proposal outlines a strategy for modelling scarf patch joints and verifying the nature of any embedded singularity at interfaces etc. All modelling strategies will be applied to predictions of static failure and/or fatigue.
