Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of the research is to establish a method for estimating, by simulation, the pilot workload and handling qualities of manoeuvring helicopters by the development of an enhanced inverse simulation capablity and new workload/handling metrics. The existing inverse simulation package Helinv will be given a significantly enhanced authenticity by a number of modelling improvements including: the effects of atmospheric turbulence, the constraints imposed by control limits and an individual blade presentation of the rotor. Computer based tools for estimation of workload based on the analysis of pilot control responses by positive wavelet techniques will be developed and associated metrics will be defined. Once established, the metrics and tools will be used to investigate the contribution of automatic flight control systems to the reduction of pilot workload. The research will be beneficial to Industry and Research Establishments by producing an accelerated design/modification phase and an efficient comparative assessment of competing rotorcraft configurations. It will produce economies by minimising flight trials and piloted flight simulations. The development of workload metircs will contribute to the safe operations of helicopters in adverse conditions.
