Summary on Grant Application Form
The South Hyogo (Kobe) earthquake struck the Osaka Bay region in Japan on Tuesday 17 January 1995. The earthquake resulted in at least 3,000 deaths. The proposed research is to go out to the site of the earthquake and to investigate the detials of the earchquake mechanisms and related structural and geological damage. The findings will initiate the study on earthquake engineering including (1) ground motion characterization, (2) the occurrences of ground failure, and (3) the performances of structures under earthquake shaking. Such research would further advance both the state-of-knowledge and the state-of-practice used in professional practice.
