Summary on Grant Application Form
A high resolution miniature display will be designed and fabricated for head-up display systems. Liquid crystal over single crystal silicon technology, developed on JOERS and LINK: optoelectronic programmes, will be exploited to produce displays with at least 768 x 576 pixels (PAL format) and with the VGA format as a subset of 640 x 480 pixels. The silicon backplane will be designed and fabricated using micron CMOS and will include array addressing and liquid crystal pixel drive circuitry for the pixels. Ferroelectric liquid crystal will be used as the light modulating material to produce binary images. Grey scale will be achieved using temporal dither and colour using sub-frame illumination with different light sources. Fibre optic serial data links and light-weight viewing optics will also be developed.
