This project is centred upon the exploitation of highly sensitive laser absorption spectroscopy in gases as a means to realise a cost effective multiplexed long range and wide area monitoring system for methane. The optical detection system will use a single frequency, modulated, wavelength stabilised DFB semiconductor laser to address up to 16 open path absorption cells. The high sensitivity offered by the f.m. system enables the use of miniature rugged cells derived form optical fibre connector techniques. The adaptability of the f.m. detection will also facilitate signal processing systems to minimise the impact of spurious interference and multipath phenomena. The system promises comparable cost per unit to pellistor technology, but with enhanced safety features, immunity to e.m.i. and chemical poisoning and an order of magnitude increase in detection range.
