Nucleic acid bases and protein absorb IV light of wavelengths less than 224nm very strongly, while other cell components such as lipids and carbohydrates are transparent in this spectral region. This matches the spectral sensitivity of diamond. We propose to develop diamond detectors of a novel ridge design for use in nucleic acid sequencing and mapping and quantitation and tissue imaging. This will eliminate the hazardous radioactive or luminescent tags from these processes. It will allow them to be completed in a few minutes or hours rather than the days, weeks or months required at present. They will be quantitive detectors and easily digitised. The detectors will be fabricated from Chemical Vapour Deposition Diamond films with strops or pixel electrodes. They can absorb UV light or betas, which will allow the imaging of beta tagged drugs within the tissue and the UV absorption of tissue and protein themselves to map the distribution of drugs.
