Summary on Grant Application Form
We aim to address the inter-locking 'labelling' problems which arise for a system describing a collection of objects to a user who is nevertheless free to browse amongst them according to his/her own interests. Because of the unpredicatability of a reader's actions, such a system must be opportunistic to further its own goals (for instance, to persuade the reader to buy, or to make an educational point). Such opportunism is not possible to a system that relies on fixed labels dynamically. We will extend existing NLG techniques to address the problems of generating object labels in a dynamic environment of the kind sketched above. The main objectives involve system building, theoretical progress, and data collection. Collaboration will be pursued with end users and technology providers. The anticipated exploitation path for this research is through the development of increasingly user-friendly, but nevertheless effective, electronic catalogues, but initial field trials of the approach are planned for a museum domain.
