The separation of fine liquid droplets from gas streams is very important in the chemical and oil production industries to protect downstream gas processing units. Wave plate demisters can be used for this purpose and this project aims to produce a validated technique to describe the behaviour of such units, which should lead to improvements in design and hence efficiency. Gas flow through these units is usually turbulent and the droplets passing through the zig-zag passages deposit on the walls. Thin liqued films are formed which may be re-entrained. To study the mechanisms governing the distribution of the liquid phase, experiments will be performed using 2D PDA and PIV to measure droplet sizes and velocities. Mechanisms of film motion and re-entrainment will also be studied. Computer simulations of gas and droplet motion will be made using available software for the primary flow and a Lagrangian model for turbulent droplet transport. These models will be validated by comparing the predictions with the experimental measurements. The numerical simulations will be used to determine the influence of flowrate and geometry.
