Summary on Grant Application Form
We intend to synthesize, characterize and understand mixed metal oxides containing Ru, Rh, Pd and Ir. By building on our previous work we shall prepare compounds in which the overlap of the 4d or 5d orbitals on the tranisition metal cations is sufficiently great to produce a delocalized electron system ie a metallic conductor. Target compounds include rock-salt related Li2MRu04(M=Mg or Zn) and phases related to the recently discovered 2H BaRh03. We shall also aim to understand better the origin of the spontaneous magnetisation of Ba3CoIr209 and to develop more Ir-containing ferromagnets. The work on Pd compounds will begin with a study of the unusual magnetic behaviour observed in Sm2Cu1-xPdx04. Finally, we shall move away from pure oxide chemistry by attempting to prepare some oxy fluorides, the electronic properties (magnetism, conductivity) of which will be measured.
