The flow, spray development, temperature, soot distribution and exhaust emissions will be investigated in a Ricardo Hydra engine, based on the 2.5L DI Ford light-duty diesel, which will be modified to incorporate first a two-valve head with a high pressure unit injector and then a four-valve head with a high pressure pump-pipe-nozzle system. The use of a piston-bowl of novel design for good optical access will allow application of laser Doppler and phase Doppler velocimeters, two-colour pyrometry and laser-induced incandescence, a technique which will be developed in this programme for quantifying the planar distirbution of the soot volume fraction during and after fuel injection as a function of swirl ratio, load and engine speed.
