Summary on Grant Application Form
The research will first investigate the behaviour of isolated columns for a range of standard pultruded wide flange sections and slenderness ratios. Sixteen specimens with axial load only will be tested and a further 8 specimens will have both axial and end-moment loading to partially simulate what happens in real frames. A number of these isolated column tests will have long-term loading to establish the influence on failure (due to buckling) of the inherent creep behaviour of material. Each column specimen will finally be leaded to ultimate failure. The make the test data even more appropriate to frames there will be 3 plane sub-assembly specimens comprising an internal column length and adjacent beams joined by practical connections. Beam loading will be combined with column loading to study any interaction effects. Results from the test, and those available in the literature will be used as follows:i. to study the interaction between local and global buckling instabilities and to identify ultimate modes of failure;ii. to determine whether current design guidance is appropriate and safe;iii. to develop better-quality guidance for columns in simple and semi-rigid frames.
