Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed programme has two aims: 1) to determine the corrosion resistance of passivated zinc/zinc alloy coated steel and zinc/zinc + organic film (duplex coated steel), in cementitious environments, and 2) to determine relative corrosion rates of different zinc coated steel systems in atmospheric environments using a recently developed sensor. Samples of galvanized, galvanized + passivated (non-chromate type) and galvanized + epoxy or a novel acrylic-ethylene coated steel will be embedded in good quality structural concrete containing 0, 0.4 and 1.0% chloride by weight of cement. Corrosion rates will be determined using eletrochemical techniques and corrosion rates and mechanisms established. Modifications will be made to the design of the galvanic sensor and its characteristic response to fluctuations in relative humidity and acidity of the atmosphere in an environmental cabinet will be systematically examined. The sensors will then be used to determine the corrosion resistance of a wide range of passivated zinc/zinc alloy coated steel systems in simuilated atmospheric environments containing S02, NOx and and ozone. In particular any synergistic effect between SO2 and ozone will be investigated. Models for corrosion will be established.
