The aim is to provide recommendations for materials selection, mix proportioning, handling, placing and compacting of low water content high performance concrete. This will ensure that all its advantages can be exploited, leading to its increased use. The emphasis will be on quantifying and understanding the rheological and vibration response characteristics of the fresh concrete, and the influence on these of the constituent materials and their proportioning. Rheology will be measured by the two-point workability apparatus, with slump and flow table tests for comparison. The vibration response will be determined by measuring the efflux rate of the concrete from a vertical pipe whilst vibrated with an electromagnetic vibrator with independent frequency and amplitude control.Stage 1 will provide a database and literature reviewStage 2 will establish relationships between rheology of normal concrete and its vibration response, thus defining rheological criteria for successful performance.Stage 3 will optimise the selection of the component materials and the proportioning of high strength mixes to approach these criteria as closely as possible.Stage 4 will determine the vibration response characteristics of these optimised mixes, thereby producing guidelines for materials selection and proportioning and construction practice.
