Summary on Grant Application Form
A specific problem relating to the quality control of structural concrete will be investigated, specifically, the detection and evaluation of PFA content in fresh concrete. The main experimental technique to be employed in the work is wide-band a.c. impedance spectroscopy which has already been shown to be able to detect the presence of this replacement in fresh concrete. Initial studies within the experimental programme will be undertaken using paste and mortar samples. The main experimental work, however, will employ concrete samples of realistic size (15 x 15 x 15 cm). The influence of replacement level; ash grading; admixtures and ternary blends on the complex response will form part of the investigation. In parallel with the experimental work, electrical modelling of the response will be undertaken.
