Summary on Grant Application Form
The purpose of the proposed research is to carry out a detailed investigation of the complex flows that occur in an open channel with floodplains using the technique of Large Eddy Simulation (LES). This work forms a continuation of earlier SERC funded work (Grant GR/G21872) in which the general applicability of the LES technique was investigated when applied to this problem. We intend, first of all, to simulate two different flow configurations for which experimental data is available using greater resolution than was possible with the previous grant. It is proposed that these simulations will be carried out on the new massively parallel Cray T3D at Edinburgh University. Secondly, we intend to fully analyse the results in order to: a) provide verification of certain measured values and; b) to establish the basic mechanisms of fluid dynamics which govern the flow behaviour.
